National Student Exchange

Testimonial

I have been in Mississippi State for the 2023 spring semester, and I truly had an amazing time! The first thing I noticed was how impressive and beautiful the campus was, but also how welcoming weather was compared to our Canadian winters.

During my semester at State, I had the chance to meet some great people, learn more about the southern culture, and experience the craziness of SEC sports and the best baseball games. Now, I cannot wait to plan my next visit down in Mississippi."

Xavier Baril (Host: MSU/Spring 2023)

What is the National Student Exchange?

That National Student Exchange (NSE) gives undergraduate students the opportunity to study at another college or university while staying on track towards graduation.  NSE partners with more than 170 colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In this consortium there are over 170 universities that participate.

Founded in 1968, NSE has helped over 123,000 students experience life and learning at another campus.  Students can participate for a semester, full academic year, or summer term.

To be eligible to apply, students must:

  • Minimum of 2.75 GPA
  • Complete at least one academic term before applying
  • Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing at Mississippi State University

How it Works

Mississippi State University is a Home Payment school. This means you stay enrolled at MSU while studying at another university through NSE.  You will continue to pay your MSU tuition and fees like you would if you were on campus.  Housing, meals and any additional costs are paid directly to your host university, and you are responsible for travel to and from your host location.

The good news is that most MSU scholarships and financial typically apply while you are on Home Pay.  Browse our partner universities and find the campus that is best for you!

How to Apply

Learn about the application process and be sure to apply by the February deadline (for priority placements).

As you plan your study-away experience, you will work closely with your home campus NSE coordinator and your academic advisor to make sure everything fits your academic goals.  Placement at a host campus depends on several factors, including payment plan options at the host campus, academic programs, enrollment limits, housing availability, and the number of applicants.   Your NSE Coordinator will help you understand these factors and talk with you about the likelihood of being placed at your preferred campus.
